Corner Lot & Entry Landscape Renovation
This project involved the redesign of the front yard and entry landscape for a contemporary duplex on a corner lot in East Vancouver. The client wanted an outdoor space that felt welcoming and private, connected to the home’s architecture, and easy to maintain year-round.
The existing yard lacked organization and any real relationship to the house. Privacy from the street was minimal, utility infrastructure was visually prominent, and planting offered little seasonal interest. A few established trees were the site’s strongest asset — worth keeping and building around.
The design worked with what was already there. Existing boulders and aluminum fence frames were retained and reworked — new stained cedar slats brought warmth and enclosure at a fraction of the cost of full replacement. Large-format concrete paving anchored a simple outdoor living space. Decorative gravel and planted containers softened the utility infrastructure without blocking access.
Purple Beech, Eastern Redbud, and Vine Maple establish the planting framework — trees chosen for their winter silhouette as. well as their seasonal colour. Textural grasses and layered understory planting add depth and movement below. Along the boulevard, native evergreens ground the streetscape quietly and require little ongoing maintenance.
The result is a landscape that reads as part of the home rather than an afterthought to it — considered, calm, and built to improve with time.
